The City of Unley will commence its new recycling and garbage collection service on 17 September 2007.

As part of the new system, business, industrial and commercial premises are eligible for:

• a 140L garbage bin (blue lid) and
  
• a 240L recyclables bin (yellow lid) and
• a 240L green organics bin (green lid) ~ if the property is landscaped and there demonstrated need for the bin.
  

The service introduces a new 240L bin with a yellow lid that will replace the current crates system and collection of bundled cardboard and newspaper.

The new bin is for paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and cans and will be collected fortnightly.

What are the changes for Business and Commercial Properties?

Business, Industrial and Commercial premises will experience some changes to the way their garbage is collected.

1:  Only one garbage bin (blue lid) can be put out for collection by Council;

2:  Additional user pays services for collection of garbage bins will no longer be permitted (those businesses affected will receive a letter about this during early August)

3:  Only recycling placed in a 240L recyclables bin (yellow lid) will be collected;

4:  Businesses will make the change from using a 240L garbage bin to a 140L garbage bin (blue lid) and will only be able to place their 240L garbage bin out for collection until March 2008.
 

What if I have a commercial waste collection need?

If your business has commercial quantities of cardboard and plastics that will not be able to be accommodated by the new 240L recyclable bin you may need to organise a new collection arrangement at your own cost.

To assist Council is currently working with the local traders associations to coordinate a preferred supplier arrangement for cardboard and plastics. It is anticipated that a preferred supplier will be able to offer local businesses the most cost effective service possible.

If you have an existing collection service with a commercial waste contractor this will not be affected. Additionally you may contract a firm of your choice rather than utilise the preferred supplier.

What other information can I expect?

Further information about the preferred supplier for cardboard and plastics for Unley will be circulated in early August.

A brochure about the changes will be delivered to all properties in Unley.  (To be delivered by Australia Post on 3 August 2007)

Further information about the service, including changes to the collection schedule, will be delivered with the new 240L recycling bin during the 3 week period commencing 13 August.
